Here is an exercise to use to reduce anxiety

Chose an object that is 4-5 feet from you and stare at that object or an area of the object that is approximately a ½ inch in diameter in size. When you have the urge to blink while staring at the object slowly close and open your eyes keeping your eyes focused on that object even during a blink. Place your total visual focus and attention on that object. At that same time tell yourself “I am allowing the muscles from the top of my head down to the tips of my toes to become more relaxed”. Beware of your body and allow your muscles to progressively relax. Do this for about 60 seconds. As you focus your entire attention on that object, stay in the here and now present and not in your thoughts about what is creating the current stress in your life. The concept of this exercise is to become more focused in the here and now and scanning the muscles throughout your body to allow them to become more calm and relaxed. This is one way to “re-boot” your brain to focus on the here and now instead of allowing anxious thoughts to overwhelm you. This is just one many techniques that I teach and build upon in helping patients to help manage anxiety. http://emapdrschulz.com
