Treating Anxiety Disorders - Options

Treating anxiety disorders must involve more than just "talk therapy".  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an important part of a recovery process; however, alone, it often falls short in providing results. I am a licensed psychologist. Earlier in my life I experienced suffering from OCD and anxiety/panic attacks. Just telling someone to change their beliefs about the events creating their anxiety such as in CBT does not relieve them of their symptoms.  In treatment, it is essential that the individual first be provided specific abilities to manage the physiological symptoms of anxiety through progressive relaxation, biofeedback training, deep breathing, mindfulness, self-soothing activities, or other techniques.  It is only after a patient is taught these skills, and successfully develops using those skills with a sense of confidence and success of applying those skills within a supportive setting that the individual can begin to face the sources of current situations and past events that trigger fear and anxiety.  EMDR or EFT can be used to deal with past trauma memories. If the anxiety triggers are not specifically related to past traumatic memories, then therapy work is done by carrying out therapy assignments in which the individual increasingly faces previous situations that resulted in fear and avoidance associated with a particular setting.  The goal is to face the previous situations that invoked fear and anxiety without avoiding it. Through repeated gradual exposures a reduction in fear and anxiety occurs. There is hope. You can learn to take back your life and face whatever fears, obsessive or ruminative or repetitive thoughts that that are keeping you back from fully enjoying your life.  http://emapdrschulz.com
