Although all mental healthcare providers should respect an individual's different beliefs, in the experience of people I have worked with this frequently has not been the case. Those who hold traditional conservative Christian beliefs, who are politically Conservative, and are seeking Christian Counseling have often reported that they did not feel comfortable with a previous mental health professional because they did not believe they could relate to them because that counselor or therapist did not seem to understand or unconditionally respect and honor their beliefs.  As a generality, in the mental health profession there is a higher propensity among mental health practitioners to be more progressive and liberal in their personal belief systems. In seeking out Counseling, especially in seeking out Christian Counseling, it is important that you have a good working rapport with a counselor that you choose. I personally am a Bible based Christian and Conservative, but it is important that whomever I work with that I respect and honor their own personal belief system and not impose my own on you. I truly believe we have the sovereignty and right to make our own decisions about what we believe and to choose our own behaviors and should not force others to adopt our beliefs or behaviors. Unfortunately, we have increasingly become divided politically between the left and right and people have become judgmental in their actions and behaviors toward people who hold different political or spiritual beliefs. Hence the reason to search for someone who will honor your beliefs and you feel comfortable in working with. Whatever your beliefs, counselors, should (but not always do) provide a safe place for you to be honest and genuine without judgement as you explore your journey in life and what is working or not working for you.  http://emapdrschulz.com
