Agoraphobia, Panic/Anxiety, Phobias, OCD, PTSD

I provide evidenced based treatment approaches for anxiety disorders.  Treating anxiety disorders must involve more than just "talk therapy".  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an important part of a recovery process; however, Dr. Schulz's personal experience of having suffered from OCD and anxiety/panic attacks earlier in his life and his years of training and experience in treating anxiety disorders has helped him to understand firsthand helping others through the debilitating symptoms of anxiety.  Unless you are given some actual tools to use to reduce symptoms of anxiety, just telling someone to change their beliefs about the events creating their anxiety and to think more positive thoughts while they you are in the middle of having a panic attack does not relieve them of their symptoms.  Telling somebody in the middle of having a rapid heart beat, feeling like they are dying, having shortness of breath, feeling like they are having a heart attack, feeling nausea, and/or feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded, or faint that they are "just having a panic attack and that they need to think differently about their experience" is not likely to be helpful. Rather, in treatment, it is essential that the individual first be provided specific abilities to manage the physiological symptoms of anxiety through progressive relaxation, biofeedback training, deep breathing, mindfulness, self-soothing activities, or other techniques.  It is only after a patient is taught these skills, and successfully develops using those skills with a sense of confidence and success of applying those skills within a supportive setting that the individual can begin to face the memories of past traumatic events or current situations that trigger anxiety.  For past painful traumatic memories evidenced based approaches such as EMDR or EFT are used.  If the anxiety triggers are not specifically related to past traumatic memories then some of the therapy work is done in between therapy sessions by carrying out successively graduated steps of therapy assignments in which the individual is increasingly exposed to previous situations that resulted in fear and avoidance associated with a particular setting.  For example, it might be something such as going to a store that the individual previously had a panic attack in and has avoided since last having a panic attack.  The goal is to face the previous situation and fear of having had a panic attack in that setting and through repeated gradual exposures in which the individual does not avoid the situation results in the fear and anxiety subsiding and going away.  Depending upon the situation, I provide online video conferencing for those individuals unable to travel to sessions because of the debilitating symptoms of anxiety that they are facing.  As needed for treatment I will also provide online chat support in between sessions.  I will individualize a treatment plan for each person based upon their circumstances.   From my own therapy journey myself of having been treated for OCD and panic attacks I have learned what is helpful or not helpful.  My approaches toward treatment are based upon my own experiences as well as evidenced based treatments.  Begin your journey today toward taking your life back and face whatever fears, obsessive or ruminative or repetitive thoughts that you can't shut off, or phobias that are keeping you back from fully enjoying your life.  There is hope and it can begin with setting up an in person or video conference appointment to begin the journey toward recovery.
